Wig Day

On Friday 31st March the Year 6 classes had a ‘WIG DAY’ in recognition
of the ‘SHAVE for a CURE’ cause that Miss Ness used to raise just over $1000.00 for Leukemia.  We wanted to show our support for Miss Ness and appreciate the many people in New Zealand that may have lost their own hair due to illness.  Miss Ness sent her hair down to Wellington and it will be used to create a new wig for those who have lost their own hair due to illness.
We were a bright colourful bunch!  We had some children bring in a gold coin donation and we collected $50 to contribute to Miss Ness’s money raised.
We are super proud of Miss Ness and thank the children and families for their support by wearing a Wig last Friday.

Hoop Gliders Part 2

The Incredible Hoop Glider Challenge - Following a scientific process

Making and flying the first glider was just the beginning!

Part Two: Working through an experiment.

Making a Hypothesis

Does the placement of the hoops on the straw effect the flight distance?

(Mia) I think it could make a difference but not very big.
(Matthew) It wont fly at all if the straw is not balanced.
(Richard) I think changing the placement of the hoops will affect the flight. It will not make it glide as well as what my first one did.
(Greta) I think the plane will not fly better becuase the wind has less space to travel if it cant go through the hoops.
(Ethan) Yes, in different ways because the wind blows the hoops and if they are in a different spot the wind will blow it in another direction.
(Aaron) Yes, but if it is longer or shorter distance, it will depend on the length in between.

Does the length of the straw affect the flight?

(Abby) I think the plane will not fly better because the wind has less space to travel.
(Robin) I think it will improve the speed but downgrade the balance.
(John) It will weigh it down to make it longer.
(Abigail) I think that if I make the straw longer, it will fall straight away and won't fly. If it is shorter I think it might fly a little bit faster.
(Suhyeok) Maybe it can go far.
(Danny) I think if I make the straw shorter it will go further and if I make the straw longer it will go a shorter distance.

Do more hoops help the hoop glider to fly better?

(Sasha)  I think the hoop glider might fly longer than before.
(Emily) I think the glider will fly lower because there is going to be more weight on the glider.
(Seungwoo) I think the plane will go more straighter than before but will be more heavier.
(Cale) I think that it will work better with 3 hoops but it wont work with 4 hoops if I keep the straw the same length. Too many hoops on the straw.
(Cam)  4 hoops will make it fly better.
(Zayliah) I think the hoop glider will go faster and farther.

Do the hoops have to be lined up in order for the plane to fly well?

(Elin) I think the plane will go higher or lower depending on where the front hoop is.
(Jeremy) I think the hoop glider will fall if the hoops are not lined up.
(Jaehee) I think if we line the hoops up in order from smallest to largest it is going to fly well and go further.
(Anthony) Yes because there needs to eb a balance of hoops.

Collecting the data

We drew a table in ouir books to record the distances.  We used this data to calculate the range, mean, median and mode.

(Jaehee's table and mean, mode, median and range calculations)

Conclusion

Check out our videos on our blogs to hear the results of this experiment.

Hoop Gliders

The Incredible Hoop Glider Challenge for 2017.

We made the hoop glider following the instructions.

Test Flights - the next step! We recorded the distance of ten throws. The wind factor was quite a variable!

Analyisng our date was completed with Range, Mode, Median and Mean.  Here the Mean, mode and median toads!

Buddy Learning
Week 5 Term 1

We have started buddy learning time with Room 2.  Our focus in Term 1 is on Reading. We will be exploring picture books, chapter books and non fiction books together, as well as sharing our learning digitally.

Check out of our Buddy Learning Blog to see more of what we have been learning about each week.

Thursday 1st March First Sailing Session

Our first session sailing.

This session was looking at the team work we need when we are at Water Wise. Getting the Rescue Tenders out and rigging the opti's all need us to work together as a team.

This is very much about the relationships we make and how we are responsible for the relationships we have.  Watch the videos below about us working together.

And here is a diary entry Summer wrote after the session.

Today Thursday Room 22 had our second session of Water Wise at Lake Pupuke. The whole point of the session was to learn how to put the boat together and how to sail the boat....

I learnt how to put the boat together but I think I need more practice in sailing!

Well. I accidentally flipped the boat, got pushed into all the lake weed and I had to jump into all the lake weed - SPLASH!  I really got stuck in all the lake weed - GROSS! The dirt was all mushy - DISGUSTING!

I had to give the opti (boat) a big push and hopped on so I could get towed back to the deck. Everyone was smiling and laughing (in a good way)  I could still smell the slimy lake weed in the water -  EWW.

I went to get my towel and came back to the bench and sat down., I noticed that everyone was having another turn. Even though I didnt want to, I had another try...  dan, dan, daaaa!

I did it - SORT OF! It was really fun too.
